Lighting plays a crucial role in filmmaking as it shapes how a scene is perceived and how the audience emotionally connects with it. It can set the mood, create tension, highlight details, or reveal hidden elements within a shot. Today, we explored how different lighting setups influence various types of shots and overall atmosphere.
We experimented with techniques like key lighting, backlighting, and side lighting to see how they impact a scene’s look and feel. For instance, harsh lighting created dramatic contrasts and intense shadows, while softer lighting added a calm, flattering effect. We also tested colored gels for mood creation and adjusted lighting placement to emphasize or obscure elements within the frame.
Additionally, we compared natural and artificial lighting to see how they affect the intensity, quality, and emotional tone of a scene. From bright and airy to dark and mysterious, small changes transformed the mood entirely.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our class experimenting with these techniques and observing their effects on the shots.
